What is CAD/CAM? A Brief Description

CAD software enables precise 2D and 3D design, allowing engineers to visualise, analyse, and modify components efficiently

CAD/CAM stands for Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing — a pair of technologies used to streamline and automate the process of designing and producing parts or products.

CAD (Computer Aided Design)

CAD involves using software (like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Fusion) to create precise 2D drawings or 3D models of components. It replaces manual drafting, allowing engineers and designers to:

  • Visualise and simulate designs
  • Perform stress and motion analysis
  • Create highly accurate engineering drawings
  • Easily modify and iterate designs

CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing)

CAM takes the CAD model and uses it to generate toolpaths and machine instructions (G code) for CNC machines. CAM software (like Mastercam, Fusion, or Siemens NX) enables:

  • Automated machining of complex parts
  • Optimisation of tool paths for speed and efficiency
  • Integration with CNC mills, lathes, and 3D printers
  • Simulation of the machining process before production

Combined Use (CAD/CAM Integration)

CAD/CAM systems allow seamless transition from design to production, reducing errors, shortening lead times, and improving overall manufacturing precision. OneCNC and Fusion are the software’s used at Avonside Engineering.

In short

CAD is for designing; CAM is for making. Together, they form a powerful workflow used across modern engineering, manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and product development industries.
